Why Your CV Gets Rejected โ€”
5 Real Mistakes
Kerala Candidates Make

โšก Key Takeaway

Your CV is not being rejected because you are unqualified. It is being rejected because of avoidable formatting, content, and targeting mistakes that are immediately visible to recruiters. Here are the 5 most common ones โ€” and exactly how to fix each one.

I have reviewed hundreds of CVs from Kerala professionals over the years โ€” engineers, nurses, IT professionals, teachers, administrators. The same mistakes appear again and again, regardless of how experienced the person is.

The frustrating truth is that many highly qualified professionals are getting rejected in the first 10 seconds โ€” not because they lack skills, but because their CV fails the first impression test.

Let me show you exactly what those mistakes are.

โŒ Mistake 01

Using the Same CV for Every Country and Every Job

A Canadian CV, a Gulf CV, a UK CV, and a German CV are four completely different documents. They differ in format, length, what personal information to include, and how achievements are presented.

Sending your UAE-format CV (with photo, date of birth, nationality) to a Canadian employer is an immediate red flag. Canadian recruiters are trained to spot this โ€” and legally cannot consider personal information like age, marital status, or nationality. It signals you have not done your research.

โœ… The Fix: Create a separate CV for each target country. Canadian CV โ€” no photo, no personal details, achievement-focused, 2 pages. Gulf CV โ€” photo, nationality, visa status, notice period. UK CV โ€” similar to Canadian. German CV โ€” photo acceptable, precise format expected.

โŒ Mistake 02

Writing Job Descriptions Instead of Achievements

The most common CV mistake of all. I see CVs that say things like "Responsible for managing IT systems" or "Handled procurement and vendor management." These tell the recruiter nothing. Every IT manager manages IT systems. Every admin handles procurement.

What recruiters want to know is: what did you achieve? What improved because of your work? What specific results can you show?

โœ… The Fix: Rewrite every bullet point as an achievement. Instead of "Managed IT infrastructure" write "Managed complete IT infrastructure across 2 campuses โ€” zero critical downtime across 11 years." Instead of "Handled asset management" write "Implemented comprehensive asset tracking system โ€” zero audit discrepancies throughout tenure." Numbers, results, impact.

โŒ Mistake 03

A LinkedIn Profile That Contradicts or Adds Nothing to the CV

Recruiters โ€” especially in Canada, UK, and Germany โ€” always check LinkedIn after reading your CV. If your LinkedIn says something different from your CV, or if it is incomplete, or if it has no recommendations โ€” it creates doubt.

Many Kerala professionals have LinkedIn profiles that were created years ago and never updated. No summary. No recommendations. Old profile photo. Connections: 43.

โœ… The Fix: Your LinkedIn profile must be a living, updated version of your best self. Complete every section. Write a strong headline โ€” not just your job title. Add a summary that tells your story in 3 sentences. Request LinkedIn recommendations from former managers or colleagues. Turn on Open To Work for your target locations. Connect actively in your target country's industry.

โŒ Mistake 04

The CV Is Too Long โ€” or Has No Structure

I regularly see 5-page, 6-page, even 8-page CVs from Kerala professionals. A recruiter spends an average of 7 seconds on the first scan of a CV. An 8-page CV with dense paragraphs gets discarded in 3 seconds.

The opposite problem is equally common โ€” a 1-page CV that has no structure, no sections, and looks like a typed list.

โœ… The Fix: 2 pages maximum for most roles. 3 pages only for very senior professionals with extensive relevant experience. Use clear section headers. Use bullet points โ€” not paragraphs. Use consistent formatting throughout. White space is your friend โ€” a clean, readable CV looks more professional than a densely packed one.

โŒ Mistake 05

No Recent Certifications or Learning โ€” The CV Looks Stale

A CV where the most recent qualification is from 2010 or 2015 sends a clear message to employers: this person stopped learning. In 2026, where AI, digital tools, and new systems are transforming every industry โ€” a stale CV is a serious liability.

This is especially damaging for IT, administration, and facilities management professionals applying to Canada, UK, or Germany โ€” where continuous professional development is expected and valued.

โœ… The Fix: Add at least 2โ€“3 recent certifications. Google Analytics, Cisco Networking Academy, Google Generative AI, CS50 Harvard โ€” all free or near-free, all internationally recognised. Even a LinkedIn Learning certificate from the past 6 months shows you are active and engaged. Update your CV every time you complete a new course.

One More Thing โ€” The Cover Letter

Many Kerala professionals either do not send a cover letter at all, or they send a generic one that says "I am interested in this position and attach my CV." That is not a cover letter. That is a waste of an opportunity.

A strong cover letter is tailored to each employer, references something specific about the company, and directly connects your experience to their specific needs. It takes 20 minutes to write โ€” and it can be the difference between an interview and a rejection.
