New Zealand is a land that Kerala professionals have increasingly been calling home. Nearly 50% of all internationally trained nurses who registered to work in New Zealand since 2022 have come from India — and a significant portion of those are from Kerala. The numbers speak for themselves.

And in April 2026, everything got better. India and New Zealand signed a landmark Free Trade Agreement that opens dedicated visa pathways for 5,000 Indian professionals every year. If you have been waiting for the right moment — this is it.

🔥 BREAKING NEWS — APRIL 2026

India-New Zealand FTA Signed — 5,000 Annual Visas for Indians!

The India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement was formally signed on April 27, 2026 in New Delhi. The labour-mobility chapter creates 5,000 annual Temporary Employment Entry visas for skilled Indian professionals in IT, healthcare, engineering, and other priority sectors. Initial stay of up to 3 years with pathways to permanent residence. Additionally, 1,000 Work and Holiday Visas are now available for younger Indian applicants.

The Big Picture — New Zealand's Migration System

New Zealand's migration system in 2026 is built around two key concepts — the Green List and the Skilled Migrant Category. Understanding these two is the foundation of your migration plan.

The Green List is New Zealand's priority occupation list — roles where the country has critical skill shortages. If your occupation is on the Green List, your path to New Zealand — and to permanent residency — is significantly faster and more structured than for other occupations.

The Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) is the points-based residence pathway for skilled workers not necessarily on the Green List. It was simplified in 2023 and remains in place until late August 2026 when new pathways will be introduced.

The Green List — Two Tiers

TIER 1
Straight to Residence
If your occupation is Tier 1, you can apply directly for permanent residence without needing to first work in New Zealand. The fastest pathway available. Registered Nurses are Tier 1.
TIER 2
Work to Residence
Work in New Zealand for 2 years with an Accredited Employer Work Visa, then apply for permanent residence. Still a strong pathway with a clear timeline.
Key Green List Occupations for Kerala Professionals

The following occupations relevant to Kerala professionals are on the New Zealand Green List 2026:

For Kerala Nurses — The NCNZ Pathway

Kerala nurses have a specific registration requirement — registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) — before they can practise as a nurse. This is the most important first step for any nurse targeting New Zealand.

Step-by-Step NCNZ Registration 2026

1
Verify Documents with TruMerit
You cannot apply directly to NCNZ. All applications must first go through TruMerit — a third-party document verification service. They authenticate your nursing qualification, registration certificate, and other documents before NCNZ will accept your application.
2
Prove English Proficiency
NCNZ requires IELTS minimum 7.0 in all four bands individually — OR OET Grade B in all sections. The same critical warning as Australia: you need 7.0 in EVERY band, not just the overall average. One 6.5 in Writing fails the entire application. OET is often preferred by nurses as it uses healthcare-specific scenarios.
3
Complete Welcome to Aotearoa Programme
NCNZ requires all internationally qualified nurses to complete two free online courses — the “Welcome to Aotearoa New Zealand” programme. This introduces culturally safe nursing practice in New Zealand and Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi). Free and done online — no excuse to delay.
4
Competence Assessment (if required)
If you have not worked as a registered nurse for at least 1,800 hours, or are not from a recognised country (USA, UK, Ireland, Singapore, British Columbia or Ontario Canada), you will need to complete a competence assessment. This has two parts: a theoretical exam (online, Pearson VUE centres) and an OSCE clinical examination (in person at Nurse Maude Centre, Christchurch, New Zealand).
5
International Criminal History Check
Required for all internationally qualified nurses. Completed through Fit2Work. Must cover all countries where you have lived or worked.
6
NCNZ Registration Granted
Once all requirements are met, NCNZ issues your registration. With registration and a confirmed job offer from an accredited New Zealand employer, you can apply for the Accredited Employer Work Visa or (for Tier 1 nurses) directly for permanent residence.
⚠️ Important Note on Demand

The NCNZ itself notes that "in recent times New Zealand has employed a large number of internationally qualified nurses so demand is currently lower than previously, except in some particular areas of speciality or experience (e.g. mental health and addiction)." This is honest. General nursing demand is strong but not as extreme as 2022-2023. Specialist nurses — mental health, aged care, ICU, paediatrics — are in highest demand. Kerala nurses with specialist experience have a significant advantage.
