Francis Bacon wrote it in the 16th century: Scientia potentia est — knowledge is power. But he never finished the thought. Because the real question is not whether knowledge is power. The real question is: power for whom?

If you lock it in a vault, it empowers only you — for a generation. Then it dies with you.

If you share it openly, it empowers everyone — and it outlives you by centuries.

This is not a philosophical argument. It is an engineering observation. And the evidence is everywhere around us.

The Vaidyar's Dilemma

Ayurveda is one of the oldest medical systems on earth. Its understanding of plant medicine, constitutional diagnosis and holistic treatment contains genuine clinical wisdom that modern pharmacology is only beginning to validate scientifically.

And yet — despite thousands of years of accumulated knowledge — it remains fragmented, inconsistent and hyper-localised. A practitioner in Thrissur may hold formulations that a practitioner in Thiruvananthapuram has never encountered. The same condition treated by two different Vaidyars may receive completely different remedies — not because the science is uncertain, but because the transmission model was never standardised.

The reason is structural. For generations, deep clinical knowledge in Ayurveda passed orally — from master to selected disciple, within family lineages, under conditions of secrecy. The precise herb ratios, the specific case observations, the lifetime of diagnostic refinement — all of it lived inside one person.

When that person died, a portion of the system died with them.

This is not a criticism of Ayurveda. The science itself is not the problem. The transmission model is. Every great Vaidyar who passed without publishing their case files reset the system. The next generation began the same experiments from the beginning — standing not on the shoulders of giants, but beside their unmarked graves.

Meanwhile, modern medical practice — whatever its flaws — built a different architecture. Every surgery, every drug trial, every failed treatment is published, indexed, peer-reviewed and globally accessible. A medical student in Kollam learns the same anatomy as a student in London. When a researcher dies, the data remains. The next generation builds forward, not sideways.

The UNIX Wars — When Corporations Made the Same Mistake

In the 1970s and 1980s, UNIX was the most powerful operating system in existence. AT&T Bell Labs, IBM, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard — every major technology corporation built its own proprietary variant and guarded it like a family secret.

If you wanted to understand the inner workings of the system — to build on it, improve it, fix it — you needed expensive licenses and corporate permission. The source code sat behind legal walls. The knowledge was power, and the corporations intended to keep it that way.

The result was the Unix Wars. Each variant became an expensive island. Engineers could not move between systems. Small developers could not afford access. The ecosystem fractured under the weight of its own secrecy.

Then in 1991, a Finnish computer science student named Linus Torvalds posted a message on an internet forum that would change everything. He had built a small kernel — the core of an operating system — and he was sharing it freely. Anyone could read it. Anyone could test it. Anyone could build on it. No license. No wall. No vault.

Instead of one team fixing bugs in a closed room, millions of engineers globally reviewed, tested and improved the code continuously.

Today Linux powers over 90% of global cloud infrastructure. Every one of the world's top 500 supercomputers runs on it. The internet backbone runs on it. The Android phone in your pocket runs on it.

The proprietary UNIX variants — IBM AIX, HP-UX, Solaris — are now legacy systems maintained for ageing banking infrastructure. Museum pieces.

The secret became irrelevant. The open architecture became the air the world breathes.

The Pattern Is Not a Coincidence

Centuries apart. Completely different fields. Identical structural outcome.

The Vaidyar who guards the formula and the corporation that guards the source code make the same mistake — they confuse secrecy with security. They believe hiding the blueprint protects their position. What it actually does is freeze their system at the moment of locking. The world moves forward. The vault stays where it was.

Why This Matters Here

Kerala is not short of knowledge. It never has been. The state produces engineers, doctors, teachers and administrators respected across the world.

What Kerala has sometimes struggled with is the willingness to share the architecture openly — whether in traditional practice, in institutional systems or in professional culture. The tendency to hold information close, to guard the formula, to make knowledge a tool of exclusion rather than a foundation for collective growth — that pattern has costs. We see them.

The antidote is not complicated. It is just uncomfortable for those who built their position on the vault.

Share the blueprint. Publish the case file. Teach the student everything you know. Put the knowledge where it can be found, tested, improved and built upon.

That is how a Vaidyar's lifetime of observation survives their death. That is how a Finnish student's kernel becomes the backbone of the internet. That is how knowledge stops being power for one — and becomes power for everyone.
