Kollam is blessed with Ashtamudi Lake — meaning "Eight Cones," or branches. This massive, deep-water estuary acts like a gigantic natural sponge for the district. When the Kallada River swells from heavy monsoon rains, Ashtamudi Lake absorbs the overflow and channels it safely into the Arabian Sea at Neendakara — a flawless natural drainage system that prevents the water from backing up into the city streets.

Unlike Kuttanad (Alappuzha), which sits below sea level, or Ernakulam, heavily concreted over its natural wetlands, Kollam has a naturally undulating topography. The terrain guides rainwater toward the backwaters and the sea rather than letting it pool in residential areas.

The Venad kings and later administrators built a brilliant, interconnected network of canals — including the historic TS Canal. These weren't just for trade; they were engineered to keep water flowing. While other cities filled in their canals to build shopping malls, Kollam's underlying water network still helps mitigate severe waterlogging today.

This geographic blessing is exactly why the fishermen of Kollam can become Kerala's first responders. Because their own homes and families in Kollam are relatively safe from floodwaters, these men have the peace of mind to take their boats, leave the district, and risk their lives to save people in Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, and Ernakulam.

Long before the modern cities of Kerala had paved roads, Kollam — historically known as Quilon or Desinganadu — was a regional powerhouse: the commercial, cultural, and administrative epicenter of the region. There's a legendary Malayalam proverb for a reason.

The Malayalam Calendar, known as Kollavarsham, was established in 825 AD — created right here in Kollam by the rulers of Venad to standardize trade and taxation. Kollam implemented a mathematically precise solar-lunar calendar that the entire state still uses today for festivals, agriculture, and astrology.

Decades before Trivandrum or Cochin had commercial flights, Kollam had an airport.

The Quilon Aerodrome at Ashramam was among the earliest airfields in the state of Kerala, built to serve the VIPs of the Madras Presidency, the British, and the Travancore Royal Family. While the rest of the state was navigating by bullock cart and backwater boats, planes were touching down in Kollam.

If you want to talk about international trade, Kollam was doing it 2,000 years ago.

When it comes to industrial muscle, Kollam built a major share of the modern Kerala economy. In the 20th century, Kollam transformed into the "Cashew Capital of the World." At its peak, the cashew factories of Kollam processed and exported a massive share of the global cashew supply — providing employment to hundreds of thousands of workers, bringing in foreign exchange, and helping pioneer the global food processing industry.

Kollam was the proud capital of the Venad Kingdom — a fiercely independent and wealthy state that patronized art, literature, and diplomacy. The Venad kings were capable administrators who built infrastructure, maintained trade relationships, and kept the region wealthy and secure.

When the catastrophic floods of 2018 swallowed entire districts, official rescue systems were overwhelmed fast. Before the military could fully deploy, the fishermen of Kollam were already on the move — navigating their coastal boats through submerged urban streets, rescuing an estimated 65,000 stranded citizens. The state honored them with a title earned in blood and sweat: "Kerala's Own Army."

But here's what the trolls don't know: it didn't stop in 2018. Even during recent flood distress, the fishermen of Kollam didn't wait for official orders or disaster relief funds. They've hired trucks at their own expense, loaded up their boats, and driven straight into other districts to help — risking their own lives and willingly damaging the very boats that feed their families, expecting nothing in return. When the rest of the state is drowning, Kollam consistently serves as its self-funded lifeboat.

We often talk about Kollam being the "Cashew Capital" as a dry economic fact. The sentimental, human reality is that the modern, educated middle class of Kollam was built on the burnt, calloused fingertips of its mothers and grandmothers.

Manual cashew processing exposes hands to highly caustic cashew nutshell liquid (CNSL). For decades, lakhs of women in Kollam sat in those factories, enduring the burning pain, the harsh conditions, and the grueling hours. They didn't do it for recognition — they did it to pay school fees. The high literacy rates and successful professionals coming out of Kollam today are, in real part, the result of that immense, silent maternal sacrifice inside those factories.

While modern politics constantly tries to divide people along religious lines, Kollam has historically been a fortress of communal harmony. This is the city where the Sasthamcotta Sree Dharma Sastha Temple peacefully coexists with its ancient ecosystem, and where festivals of different faiths have historically supported each other. Because Kollam was built on global trade, its people learned centuries ago that collaboration, hospitality, and mutual respect are worth more than division.
